Your Word's Good Enough For Me

Picking up on Nathan Bradfield's post about illegal immigrant amnesty and Michelle Malkin's take on the issue as well...

"The Hagel-Martinez bill would divide illegal aliens into three groups. Most of those who have been in the country for more than five years would be granted access to citizenship, those here more than two years but less than five years would have to go home first but would also be eligible for citizenship, while those here two years or less would not have a path." - Quoted from The Washington Times

And how, exactly, are we supposed to determine the length of time an illegal immigrant has been in the country illegally? Do they have some sort of time-stamped document proving when they crossed the border as an undocumented worker? Are there pay stubs for those who have been paid under the table?

I can see the whole thing now -

Immigration Officer: So, you came into the country undetected, illegally, attained a job through fraudulent means, and have worked here with no record keeping whatsoever.

Soon-to-not-be-Illegal Immigrant: Si.

Immigration Officer: And you've been here illegally how long?

Soon-to-not-be-Illegal Immigrant: My lawyer say to say 5 years.

Immigration Officer: Fine, fine.

Soon-to-not-be-Illegal Immigrant: Que? No pay fine.

Immigration Officer: No, no "fine" - no "pague un fino." I mean, we're okay taking your word for it.

Yes, amnesty is going to work out just fine. I mean no pague un fino. What I should say is it will all go as smooth as silk. Not that expensive imported silk; the domestic, made by migrant workers silk.
